Conference Presentations

Work from the project has been presented at the International Sociological Association World Congress of Sociology in Melbourne in June 2023, and at the Institute of Australian Geographers Annual Meeting in Perth in July 2023.

Further, academic insights from the project have presented to Association of Industrial Relations Academics of Australia and New Zealand Conference in Perth in February 2024, and accepted to be presented at the forthcoming American Association of Geographers Annual Meeting in the USA in April 2024.

Policy Interventions

Closing Loopholes Reforms

Dr Barratt, alongside collaborators Drs Veen, Goods and Smith, made a submission to Closing Loopholes senate inquiry which passed in February 2024. Their submission was drawn upon 14 times in the Senate Committee Report, providing an evidence base for this significant reform to the regulation of gig work.

Workforce Australia Inquiry

Dr Barratt led a submission with Drs Veen, Goods and Smith in response to the Senate Inquiry into Workfore Australia, explaining how gig work interacts with Australia’s welfare system, and outlining 3 recommendations to the Select Committee. The Inquiry report cited our research, and engaged with the gig economy’s role in employment services, and how it might change, in Recommendation 2 and Recommendation 53.

Victorian Government Reforms

Dr Barratt was an invited participant in Victorian Government Phase Two Gig Workforce reforms consultation with stakeholders (Academics).
